Apple trees benefit enormously from companion planting — chives and garlic repel aphids and scab-causing fungi, while marigolds deter nematodes and nasturtiums act as trap crops for aphids. Avoid black walnut (juglone toxicity) and nightshades, which share blight diseases with apples.
